This year at Europe's Gamescom there were plenty of games
and manufacturers displaying their new 3D wares. The popular
consensus is for car racing games and sports games to get the
3D treatment. These types of games have the most to benefit
from 3D technology.
There is also a big push for shooters to recieve the 3D treatment,
and games like Lord Of The Rings and Mortal Kombat are seeing
3D release soon. There is more of a cost to developing a game in
3D (about 20% more) but the upside could potentially be really
huge for game developers.
Because of the movie Avatar, there has been quite a push to
develop 3D entertainment for the home. Manufacturers such as
Sony are really pushing 3D games and blu-rays because they
are actively trying to sell 3D hardware such as televisions and
blu-ray players. The content is key to the success of 3D in the
home.
Still, many analysts predict that 3D gaming will take some time
to take-off in the home. Some industry analysts predict a two
year timeframe for consumers to adopt the technology fully into
their homes.
