NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision
We are now starting to see many manufacturers starting to market their own versions of 3D glasses. Indeed, most of the
major television manufacturers who are introducing 3D TVs are also either bundling 3rd party glasses or manufacturing
their own versions to be used with their sets. But, PC and laptop gamers still have a way to go before 3D glasses are
included in hardware bundles.
Nvidia's answer is the new GeForce technology
powering it's active shutter glasses. Mainly for gamers,
these glasses are a very high quality gaming solution.
There have been many positive reviews for the Nvidia
glasses but they don't come cheap... around $200 for
the kit.
The glasses come bundled with all the hardware that you need. There is an IR transmitter, all the necessary cables,
software, and instruction manuals. The glasses must be used with either a 120 Hz monitor or a 3D Ready DLP projection
television. There is an included DVI-to-HDMI cable that is required when using a DLP television set. The glasses are
rugged and solidly built and can be used if you wear prescription eyewear as well.
The Experience
Many reviews are very positive for the glasses. The glasses deliver a very believable gaming experience and are very light
and very wearable for those long sessions of Left 4 Dead :). The glasses are activated by the IR transmitter and will sync
up when you are within viewing range of your monitor. Some users have complained that you must press the resync
button to get the glasses to receive the signal after having turned away from the monitor for a while, but it is a minor
inconvenience. The glasses also do not cause much eyestrain, especially after long viewing sessions... queasiness and
dizziness seems to have been avoided with these glasses... so those all night gaming marathons should only want you
to see in 3D more often.
Buying Tips
The best advice if you are seriously considering these glasses is to go to your local electronics store and try them out for
yourself. Looking at screenshots online not only will dissuade you, but you will not be able to see the 3D experience in
this way.
While active shutter 3D glasses technology is still in its infantcy, the technology will soon hit the mass market. Expect
prices to come down for gear including 3D glasses. And don't forget that many games are not yet taking full advantage of
3D... most games are still being developed with 2D graphics in mind. Once game developers start coding games in 3D
then we will start to really see this technology take off and be better able to make use of the 3D glasses experience.
With that being said though, it is still worth checking out your fave game like Left 4 Dead, Call Of Duty 4, Far Cry 2, and
Guitar hero in 3D. Give the glasses a try, you'll be glad you did.
