Sony 3D PS3... Summer 2010!
Many people have been eagerly awaiting the announcement from Sony that the PS3 will support 3D. And it's official. By summer 2010 this will indeed be the case. Not only will the PS3 be able to play 3D games but also 3D Blu-ray content. The PS3 is in fact in the official 3D Blu-ray spec, so that is good news. The other piece of good news is that older versions of the PS3 will be backwards compatible to all of this great new 3D content. All that will be required is probably a firmware and software update.
Sony is waiting to release the new PS3 3D updates so that it can coincide with Sony' Bravia 3D televisions. At that point, you'll probably log into your PS3 account and be able to download the update. Hopefully the software and firmware update will be available in one download.
The one glitch to this is that many other companies have claimed that HDMI 1.4 will be needed for 3D Blu-ray playback at full resolution. The PS3 only has HDMI 1.3 equipped at the factory currently, though execs at Sony say that 1080p to each eye will be possible once the firmware update has been applied.

So this also leaves us with another question... what about the Xbox 360? We all know that Microsoft updated the console hardware with HDMI outputs and legacy gamers were left to settle without HDMI. And, the Xbox 360 does not currently have support for Blu-ray. So, does this mean a future console called the Xbox 1080 will be available soon? We'll have to wait and see...

Sony 3D PS3 update 3.30
Just a few days ago Sony announced that it is releasing firmware update 3.30 for the PS3 console. The big news is that this update will support 3D games which will be coming to stores soon. New features that are also supported include an improvement to the trophy system where users can more adequately classify and compare their trophies with friends. There is still not much in the way of commercially available 3D movies however, so there will be some waiting to get your hands on the latest 3D movie.
